Ptuj Carnival/Castle

The above two pictures are the don't do justice to the beauty of the landscape that our bus trecked through on the way to Ptuj, but were taken out the window of the bus while driving down the road (so are pretty good considering the circumstances).
This statue was located just inside the massive wooden gates at the entrance to the Ptuj Castle. We climbed and climbed and climbed in order to reach the entrance. There was an old cobblestone type path that made the trek somewhat difficult. It was actually quite a relief when we got to a segment that had stairs. One thing for sure, ask anyone on the trips to these places and thabout the hills. They would tell you that they prewould prefer if there was simply a moat.

This is the clock tower on the East side of the castle. Although cloudy and cold, the day was gorgeous for taking pictures!

The view from outside of the stables looking down on the river and lake that are near the city of Ptuj.

Another view from that platform. It was an absolutely gorgeous sight!

Barbora and I with the Kurrents. They chase away the winter weather and bring in the spring. They are also known as beasts that capture women. More noted about this occurence below.

Golden horse in the courtyard of the castle.

Courtyard of the castle with the ERAMUS students standing around.

Barbora and I with a gorgeous view behind us. She is from Slovakia.

Cute building in the city with many chimneys.

Rooftop picture of Ptuj with the lake in the background.

Steeple of the gorgeous church in downtown Ptuj.

Stables at the castle.

The door going further up into the castle lawn...we didn't get to go this far. The drunken Kurrents were occupying that space.

Looking down into the entrance of the castle.

The church steeple from the ground. I believe that this is the one that also has a clock on it.

I am not sure who or what these guys are, but they were part of the parade.

They were running back and forth with the guys on the outer part of the street and the women in the middle.

A little band that went through.

The hay bail, vines, and mailman?

I think that this part was supposed to be like a wedding reception.

Slovenia was the home to the first traveling salesmen. They were basket makers who walked all across Europe selling their handmade goods.

Some random old people.

Witch!

The sign says it all!

Chicken

The rear-ends of some colorful Kurrent.

Another old guy with a weird mask.

Cute couple...too bad his face wouldn't stay on.

The gypsies started to display their cultural identity.

Lots of filthy gypsies! (As Matej would say)

The gypsies keep coming.

Sharpening their knives.

There were bullwhip type things, they made extremely loud noises. The next few pictures illustrate them in action.

Ok...so the next few weren't the bullwhips, but here they are!

I have no idea what this was.

More bull whips.

They danced and walked in traditional Slovenian attire. It is possible for Slovenians to not look like beasts.

Girls with an attitude.

This puppet boy thing so peed on us!! And it was cold outside!!!

Boy riding lamb that bit.

The horses at the beginning of the parade.
